    Deshan Patil

Gryffindors are known for their courage and bravery, and Deshan exemplifies his house in many ways, as well as is a fine role model for the rest of the school. If he's not spending his time on the Quidditch pitch, he's working on becoming a future Healer - much like the woman he is smitten with. (Which, might I add, he shows exemplary taste in birds, as Amala shows grace, maturity, and responsibility - something that many students here seem to lack.)

He's very protective of his only sibling, his little sister Devi. Like many Gryffindors, Deshan spends whatever free time he can outdoors and amongst friends, alone time isn't the highest thing on his list of priorities.

A bloke who's proudest moment - and best memory - includes going on a magic carpet ride with Amala? It is clear that he has a sense of adventure, and he's not going to leave his love ones behind as he's off discovering the world.

Trust me when I say there is a lot more to this bloke than this essay could do justice for. So take a bit of advice, next time you pass him in the halls, talk to him! It'll be worth your time.

I rather miss Dumbledore's thought topics. I think we could use a bit of them again. It seems that we use the journals to tear each other apart with gossip; or we use them to dwell on some rather dark topics. It'd be nice if they were used for good, again, to talk about something that isn't so mean or so terrifying. I guess some could say I'm being naive, but I'm not - least I don't think I am - I just think that with all the bad already in the world, to dwell on it or create more seems rather.. pointless. We should use these for something positive or constructive.

    Such as..

Tell me something good. Something that makes you happy or could make other's happy.

I can start: My nephew is absolutely brilliant. He's so small, innocent, and well, bloody adorable if I can say so without seeming like a "ponce". I absolutely love being an uncle, its one of the best things in the world, really.

Also, unrelated, but as my girlfriend happens to be very vested in the Care of Magical Creatures Club, I'd late to remind people to get their raffle tickets for those Puff Pups!

There is a lot of talk about the Minister. About administrative policies. Etc and so on. A lot of complaining really, about the way things are run. It makes me wonder, how would you guys do things differently? I'm not saying I support our minister on even half all of his platforms, but I find the complaining rather tiring - I think we'd put our energies to better use if we can think of how we would do things differently.

Someday one of us with any luck me might be in the Minister's place - someday it is our peers who will be spearheading the policies and so on - so, my classmates, how will our generation make things better?

I kind of miss Dumbledore's assignments - at least we were thinking and talking about things other than bloody rumours

I need every prefect that is still in their right mind to help figure out who, exactly, is... uh, not? Make certain they do not have a wand in their possession, if possible, and try to figure out where they've been today - perhaps the quicker the problem is figured out, the quicker our professors can fix this. My head hurts

This is going to be a long term, if there will be fighting within the walls of Hogwarts just as there is on the outside. Consider this a reminder of our school rules, fighting is prohibited and not tolerated, even amongst family members.

Is that really all anyone does these days? Fight?

    {Warded to Amelia & Edgar}
I am so very fortunate I have siblings that I get a long with. Thank you two, dearly, for being.. well, for the lack of any more coherent thoughts at the moment.. you.

On the off chance I become too preoccupied in the next few days, I merely wish to write and wish everyone a Happy New Year. I hope that 1977 will bring you luck, love, and a certain happiness despite the troubled news that we've been dealing with lately. Fellow seventh years, it will be our last term before leaving Hogwarts, let's make the best of it. Well, let's make the best of it within the school rules as Amala and I really would appreciate an easier term.

Er, right, then. I've got things to do so I suppose I'll put my journal down.

It is in times of tragedy that we really need to come together and unite. Some of us are less affected by the events than others, but we are all, in some degree, affected by the autrocities that transpired a couple days ago. We need to embrace the family and friends that we have, and treasure every moment we have with one another, as we learn that in an instance, families can be torn apart. I'm troubled by the news that was in the Daily Prophet, and if anyone needs anything, do not hesitate to ask. If nothing else, I offer a shoulder to lean on, and an ear to vent to.

    Eddie,

So I just so happened to write out a nice, long letter to owl you and a blizzard began. Here I was attempting to be a good brother and make time to owl you something long and worthwhile, and the weather is bloody insane here. We've been locked in since Tuesday, and it's getting increasingly harder to avoid those who have caught the first winter bug. Between feeling absolutely restless, Quidditch practise being canceled (as we cannot go outside) and the sheer amount of germs going around?

You probably guessed it, but I've been hiding in the library. Call me a coward, but at least I'm healthy, and finished with the reading for the rest of the term.

How is Matty doing? I can't wait until the Hols and I get to see him for more than Hogsmeade visits. Have you and Sarah picked the name yet? If it's not to late, I think I like the name Olivia, better.

I'm thinking of inviting Enid over for the family Christmas dinner at home. I haven't yet, but it might be nice. Would that be leading her on? I know she's my girlfriend, rather, it's just bringing her home seems to scream of a huge commitment. I like her, I enjoy being around her, I'm just not certain that we're at that level, whatever that level is. Merlin, I likely sound incredibly juvenile to you right now.

I should go, I hear some sort of calamity out in the hall.

    -Josh

Oh, and purely because I haven't taken the piss out of you lately, I must ask. How often are you wearing heels, now, Eddie? You did seem rather skilled in them during the bet, so fess up. Just what do you do with your free time.

    If My Broom Could Speak
    By Joshua Bones

If my broom could speak, it could tell you where I've been, where I am, and where I am going; my past, my present, and my future. There is a muggle expression, I believe Ted taught this to me, that you should not judge a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes, well, I ask that you do not judge me until you've ridden gone a mile on my broom.

My broom could talk of my past; well I suppose not this broom in particular as it is relatively new, but figuratively speaking. I've been flying almost as long as I could walk, with a Quidditch Enthusiastic father and an older brother like Edgar, did I really have a choice in the matter? The broom could tell you of the mischief we caused, though I blame Eddie. The stress we caused our mum over the years. And, most importantly, it would warn you that you cannot fly without a broom, no matter what Edgar and Amelia might otherwise like to say. (Tricksters, they were.) It would be able to tell you about how well we got on, the three of us, outdoors most of the time. We spent more time in our Tree House than our actual house, during the summers that is. My broom would tell you how I followed the advice and leadership of my older siblings blindly, much to a reckless degree, and no matter the outcome, I never stopped trusting them.

My broom could talk of where I'm at, currently. I'm a 17 year old bloke, who studies more than everyone most, takes his Head Boy duties seriously, does his best on the Quidditch Pitch, and spends what little free time he has with his girlfriend. (Thankfully, she's also on the Quidditch Team, so we at least have Quidditch practises together.) My broom would likely tell you that I spend far too much time writing my older brother and sister, as most people would have out grown such a phase, but sadly, I still follow them (just not so blindly) and would follow them to the moon and back. I do know better, though, there is no flying without a broom.

My broom could talk of where I'm going. Figuratively speaking. I want to be the Minister of Magic some day, and everything I do, I'm working toward that. I'm studious, involved, dedicated, and trying to keep my reputation clean so that I have a chance. I'm trying to learn everything I can about politics, muggle and wizarding alike, so that I can govern our people with their best interests and effectively resolve conflicts among the divisions of our society. I want a wife, children, and a house with a tree house in the yard. I have no intention of playing Professional Quidditch, but I will never stop flying, and never go a day without a broom near by.

I've had a broom in my past, I have it now, and I will always have one in my future. If my broom could speak, well, I'm sure it would have some stories to tell. Lucky for me, though, my broom cannot.

First, I'm certain that our Headmaster wouldn't purposefully break the journals. I highly doubt he has that much interest in our private lives.

I have come to the very distinct conclusion that there is no pleasing everybody. Common sense, really, but it is becoming more and more apparent - particularly through the journals. Must we only write when we have something to complain about? Can't we write about the good things in our lives? Surely you all have something to be happy for?

Let's talk about the Masquerade. It didn't go the way everyone had hoped, but that doesn't mean it was AWFUL. First, it could have been "worse". We could have had the spell put on us for the ENTIRE night, right? Regardless, why are we looking at it so negatively? The staff here hosted a Masquerade Ball, not something that happens every year, not something that they had to host for us. The alternative? Another night just like all other nights in the castle. At least we had something new and different to break up the monotony of classes and studying. Also? You complain that we were forced to have a date with some person you didn't know who it was, and this was such an atrocity? Are you all nutters? No, its not what you wanted to happen, but when else in your ENTIRE life, will you have the chance to socialise with someone without the barriers of social constructs in the way? Never. It's a unique experience, that could easily be used to enrich your personality if the experience had been embraced and not shunned. I, for one, did not have a miserable time with my forced date.

I find it ironic that the majority of you say that I have a stick up my arse. Go figure

No, really, why do we have to view EVERYTHING so negatively? There's a lot of sick and horrible stuff going on in this world, that one Masquerade in comparison is NOT worth complaining about. Take a deep breath. Enjoy the security this castle affords us. Enjoy the time we have here, with our peers. Take ADVANTAGE of it. Make the most of it. Once you are out in the real world, the horrible shite happening in our world will no longer be so "distant" and far off. Right now, we have the ability to be adolescents. We have the ability to enjoy Balls, socialise with our peers, and know that we are safe. I wouldn't want to look back on my time at Hogwarts and remember nothing but my complaints. There has got to be SOMETHING you like about it here, or you wouldn't BE here. No one, after all, is FORCED to attend.

Yes, I've got a detention. You can stop whispering in curiosity about it. Do I feel bad that I didn't do the assignment? Yes. Do I look forward to my first and hopefully only detention? No. Does this make me a "bad" or "unqualified" Head Boy? I don't think so, I guess that's an opinion call. It does make me HUMAN though. Go figure. I guess it was only a matter of time before it became obvious that even your Heads are humans. Let's not die in shock though.

Let's all take a collective breath and relax for a moment. Easier said than done, but necessary. I am awarding everyone who has shared their responses to Dumbledore's assignment publicly five points, regardless of the sentiments shared. I will continue doing so until this assignment is over. The points are simply because it takes courage to share your responses and opinions on the topic publicly when they are such controversial opinions.

You do not have to do so publicly, but should you show that form of bravery, than I feel it ought to be recognised.

Respect: An essay by Joshua Bones

What is respect? To me respect is a form of admiration. That is, while you do not have to like the person that you respect (but it certainly helps if you do like them), you do have to admire something about them. Respect is the esteem in which you hold someone, those that you respect have usually done or said something that you have found to be worthy of your admiration. It is hard to put in words, so, instead, let me write about 10 types of people that I respect.

One. People who aren't afraid to be different. Those who don't succumb to peer pressure simply to blend it.
Two. People who act with dignity and grace and do not act out for the pure sake of misbehaving, but act out in the case of injustices.
Three. People who can hold a debate and argue their points without resorting to violence, petty insults, or other defensive mechanisms.
Four. People who know what they want and work towards getting it.
Five. People who show bravery in standing up for their beliefs, even if they get armed for said beliefs.
Six. People who fight for noble causes or on other's behalves.
Seven. People who are willing to go to war to protect their homes, cities, countries, and loved ones.
    Eight. People who respect themselves.
Nine. People who act, even for a moment, in a selfless manner, putting others before themselves.
Ten. Leaders who serve their people and help lead them to a safer, happier era.

It looks as if the disaster with the Care of Magical Creatures animals has finally been mostly cleaned up. While there are a few creatures still on the loose, rest assured they are completely harmless. Such as a pair of Puffskiens, which, according to Professor Kettleburn, he wouldn't be surprised if a couple of people chose to keep them as pets. If you are trying to keep them as pets you are being advised to turn them over to Professor Kettleburn as soon as possible. If you do so by Friday you will not be assigned any detentions or lose any points.

Professor Kettleburn is compiling a checklist of the animals missing right now, and as soon as he is finished he will either hand it to myself, Amala, or a member of his COMC Club. If you find any animals, and know how to take care of them, please help out and return them to Professor Kettleburn. If you are unsure of how to handle said animal, then you should just leave it be and let a professor or Prefect as soon as possible.

If you are walking about the castle and see any messes remaining, the scourgify charm works wonders. And if anyone told you classes were canceled it was a rumor. Attend courses as normal.

Who, reading this entry, has ever snogged someone else? Who has ever wanted to?

Who, reading this entry, has ever heard a rumor that was false? Who has helped perpetrate a falsehood?

The point I'm trying to make is I find it very disheartening how quick you lot are to harp on Amala. First of all, where is the proof? As far as I can tell neither Sirius, nor Amala, have owned up to this rumor. Peeves likes to cause trouble, so perhaps we should take what he says with a grain of salt. Second, if she did snog Sirius Black, I should remind you that she is, in fact, only human. She may be Head Girl, but she's still a 17 year old witch who is trying to balance classes, activities, and responsibilities, and I say the lot of you should show her respect and not divulge in such rumors. Particularly not with such a judgmental tone.

Finally, if I hear one more person running their mouth off about "Heads" being "above the law" I will dock points for disrespect. In situations like this, Professor Flitwick will be the one to look into any accusations of rule braking activities and decide on any appropriate punishments if she is "guilty". We are not above the law, but just as we don't dock points or assign detentions to students for rumors, I find it highly ridiculous you expect our Head Girl to be punished for a rumor.

That is all I have to say on the matter.
